Tour du Mont Blanc – Hiking Around Mont Blanc Massif

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a mythical hiking trail that goes around the Mont Blanc Massif, crossing the borders of France, Italy and Switzerland. It attracts thousands of hikers from all over the world each summer because of its breathtaking views, close encounters with wildlife and the authentic local culture and cuisine.

Here is an example day by day itinerary. This can be modified according to your requirements (could be a bit shorter or longer). Please do get in touch and I will be happy to give you my advice and create a taylor-made itinerary for you.

Best period: June – September

Suitable for hikers who are able to do 6-7 hour tours per day on mountain trails. No technical climbing and no glacier crossings. Maximum altitude around 2700 m.

ITINERARY:

  • Day 1:
  • Arrival at Geneva airport.
    Meeting your guide.
    Transfer to Les Houches and check in Hotel.
    Free time and dinner in Les Houches.
  • Day 2:
  • Depart from Les Houches. We will take the Bellevue lift, climb the mountain pass Col du Tricot and descend down to the village of Les Contamines, where we will spend the night. On the way we will enjoy beautiful vistas, dominated by Dome du Gouter and Aiguille du Bionassay.
    We will stay in a refuge or dormitory style hostel room. Breakfast and dinner included.
    Day summary: 5,5-6 hrs; Vertical gain for the day: +600 m / -1300 m
  • Day 3:
  • From Les Contamines we start the day with a gentle walk to the lovely church Notre Dame de la Gorge, before starting our ascent to Col du Bonhomme mountain pass. We finish the day in Les Chapieux and spend the night in a mountain refuge.
    Day summary: 7-7,5 hrs; Vertical gain for the day: +1200 m / -950 m
  • Day 4:
  • We start the day with a short bus ride to Mottets Refuge. Here we start our ascent of the Col de la Seigne, which marks the border between France and Italy. We descent into Val Veny and the Combal lake from where we can catch a bus for a short ride to Courmayeur.
    We will stay in a hotel with breakfast included.
    Dinner in Courmayeur.
    Day summary: 6-7 hrs; Vertical gain for the day: +750 m / -790 m
  • Day 5:
  • We will take a bus ride to Val Ferret at the foot of the impressive Grandes Jorasses. We will climb Grand col du Ferret and cross into Switzerland. From there we will descend to the alpine village of La Fouly.
    Night in a refuge/hostel with dormitory rooms. Breakfast and dinner included.
    Day summary: 6-7 hrs; Vertical gain for the day: +950 m / -1100 m
  • Day 6:
  • On this day we will do a challenging ascent to the beautiful mountain pass Fenetre d’Arpette at 2665 above sea level*. The view from the top is impressive! Finish the day in the village of Trient.
    *We have the option for an easier route to Trient, in case we don’t want to do the steeper climb to Fenetre d’Arpette.
    Night in a refuge/hostel with dormitory rooms. Breakfast and dinner included.
    Day summary: 7-8hrs; Vertical gain for the day: +1200 m / -1400 m
  • Day 7:
  • From Trient we climb up to Col de Balme, and where we will reach the Swiss-French border and descend down to the village of Le Tour. From there we will take public transport back to Chamonix.
    Day summary: 5-6 hrs; Vertical gain for the day: +1070 m / -950 m
  • Day 8:
  • Extra day in case of bad weather / Free time in Chamonix / Day tour from Chamonix
    We have various options for this day and we will decide which one to take depending on weather conditions and how we feel. Some of the options include:
    – Free time in Chamonix – the capital of alpinism, where in 1786 Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard set off for the first ascent of the legendary Mont Blanc. We can visit some of the museums that will reveal us some of the history of this impressive mountain town.
    – A day hike in the Aguilles Rouges Natural reserve. Visit Lac Blanc, from where we will enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Massif du Mont Blanc.
    – Rafting in Chamonix.
    Dinner in Chamonix.
    Night in a hotel room with breakfast included.
  • Day 9:
  • A walk in the Aiguille Rouge Natural Reserve and Lac Blanc, from where you can have a panoramic view of the entire Mont Blanc massif. If we are lucky we will encounter some bouquetins along the way. We will descent right back down to Chamonix.
  • Day 10:
  • Transfer Chamonix – Geneva airport.
    Fly home.

  • The trip will be guided by UIMLA certified mountain guides.
  • Maximum 8 participants per 1 guide.

  • The tour can be customized depending on the type of accommodation you prefer – hotels, mountain huts, etc.
  • The organizers reserve the right to make any changes to the itinerary and location in case of bad weather or snow conditions.
