Winter ascent of Mt Vihren’s North Face via The Couloir (Kuloara)
The north face of Mt Vihren is a benchmark in Bulgarian alpine climbing and a rite of passage for any aspiring alpinist and mountaineer. When you are standing in front of it, a sense of respect and fear will fill your heart.
We offer you an individual climb of the Mt Vihren north face via The Couloir tour (Kuloara in Bulgarian). Technical alpine climbs require maximum concentration and efficiency, therefore, in our opinion, the 1:1 format is the best and safest approach for this route (1 guide : 1 participant).

Difficulty level: Hard
You need to be in good physical condition. The altitude gain from the parking is 1300 m and the technical climbing sections are around 250 m. You need to have previous experience on mountaineering routes with crampons and ice axe. Call us in case you have doubts regarding the necessary experience.
ITINERARY:
- Day 0:
- Arrival in Bansko on the day before the climb. You will meet your guide, check all the equipment and there will be a briefing for the upcoming day.
Night in Bansko. - Day 2:
- Early wake up, way before sunrise. We will drive to Bansko ski area. From there we will start our approach to the start of the climb. In around 2.5 hrs we will be at the base of the climb. We will climb the Couloir and descend Mt Vihren via one of the easier routes. Exact descent route will be decided according to meteo conditions. Walk back to the car. We should be back in Bansko by early afternoon.
Hiking time: 10-12 hrs Vertical gain: +1300/-1300m.
