Introduction to backcoutry Splitboard and Ski touring course

Learn the fundamental skills of safe backcountry travel, including: how to use an avalanche beacon, rescue techniques, snow stability tests, avalanche forecast analysis and tour planning, how to use Splitboard/touring skis and climbing skins, uphill travel techniques (track setting, kick- and step-turns, pacing), downhill travel techniques (route selection, turning in varying snow conditions). And of course lots of hands-on experience.
This is a basic course for those that want to become familiar with the basics of splitboarding and ski touring, the equipment that’s required and to deepen your knowledge of avalanche safety. We will look in detail how to read and choose the terrain, how to find safe ascent and descent lines and what are the good practices when planning a day in the mountains.
Dates: 27-28 January 2024, Pirin mountain, Bezbog peak
Difficulty level: Intermediate – Advanced
The course is suitable for Beginner splitboarders and ski tourers. You need to be confident on red runs in the resort. Minimal off-piste experience required.
ITINERARY:
- Day 0:
- Arrival and accommodation in Bansko
Lecture/Discussion – Introduction to backcountry touring: Equipment and Safety.
Equipment check - Day 1:
- Practical activities:
Assessment of the level of the group. Techniques for riding off-piste.
Working with avalanche gear – searching for one and more than one avalanche victims
Climbing Mount Bezbog – Choosing lines for ascent and descent. Techniques for uphill touring
Feedback from the past day.
Lecture – Choosing the line of descent. Safety climbing and skiing.
Planning for the next day. - Day 2:
- Practical activities:
Climbing a summit and descent.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice what they have learned under the supervision of the guide.
Techniques for riding in deep snow and off piste terrain.

Necessary equipment:
- Avalanche equipment (Transceiver, shovel, probe)*
- Splitboard or touring skis + poles*
- Appropriate backpack (around 30L)
- Appropriate clothing
- Ski Helmet

Important information:
- The Splitboard group will be guided by certified splitboard guide Nikolay Pavlov – Nikyata
- The Ski group will be guided by certified ski guide Vanya Cromboa.
- Maximum 6 participants per 1 guide.
- Minimum number of participants: 4 Maximum participants: 12.
- Equipment rentals for the duration of the course: Splitboard and poles – 120 BGN, snowshoes and poles – 30 BGN, avalanche equipment – 50 BGN, touring ski – 100 BGN.
- We can recommend a family guesthouse in Bansko for 40 BGN per night.
- The organizers reserve the right to make any changes to the itinerary and location in case of bad weather or snow conditions.
