Steep terrain and alpine techniques course

Climbing mountains in winter sometimes requires alpine equipment and techniques such as walking with crampons, using a rope to access the face you’re going to ride, using an ice axe to climb and to perform self arrest. A good riding technique is a must.

During this course, we will teach you the basics of winter mountaineering, adapted to the needs of ski and splitboard mountaineering. We will learn how to use crampons and ice axe, basic knots, creating anchors, rappelling into a face using a rope.

Dates: 14-15 February 2026, Pirin mountains

Difficulty level: Medium

Good physical condition is required. Good technique for off piste skiing or snowboarding.

ITINERARY:

  • Day 0
  • Arrival in Bansko, Check in
    Discussion – Alpine equipment and application. Basic knots.
    Equipment check
  • Day 1
  • Alpine techniques introduction:
    Building snow anchors, walking in crampons, rappelling, self arrest
    Feedback from the day
    Planning the next day
  • Day 2
  • Practicing all techniques from the previous day under guide’s supervision:
    Climbing a mountain and riding down, using alpine techniques
    Techniques for riding on steep terrain
    Feedback from the past day

Training (1 guide per 4 participants)*

Price does not include:

Accommodation*, food, transportation, personal equipment, lift ticket.

Necessary equipment:

  • Splitboard or touring skis + poles*
  • Avalanche equipment (Transceiver, shovel, probe)*
  • Alpine equipment (ice axe, crampons, harness, 2 locking carabiners, sling)*
  • Appropriate backpack (around 30L)
  • Appropriate clothing
  • Ski Helmet
  • Insurance

Important information:

  • The trip groups will be guided by certified mountain guides Nikolay Pavlov – Nikyata and Pavel Peev
  • Maximum 4 participants per 1 guide.
  • Minimum number of participants: 4 Maximum participants: 8
  • In the in case that you do not have some of the equipment, we can assist in providing it for rent or purchase.
  • Equipment rentals for the duration of the course: Splitboard and poles – 130 BGN/66 €, avalanche equipment – 60 BGN/30 €, touring ski – 133 BGN/68 €.
  • We can recommend a family guesthouse in Bansko.
  • The organizers reserve the right to make any changes to the itinerary and location in case of bad weather or snow conditions.
